When we talk about sleep, we often focus on how important it is to have a regular bedtime routine, sleep schedule, etc. After all, humans are creatures of habit, and we thrive on structure and a certain amount of predictability. But, sticking to a bedtime routine/sleep schedule is not the only prerequisites to enjoying a good sleep. Using well-designed pillows matter too. They support the head and neck, help align the spine, and keep you comfortable.
Yet, for all the good pillows do, many of us don’t give them due importance. What we need to remember is that using the wrong pillows can actually throw our entire body out of alignment. Aches and pains and sleepless nights become the norm. If you’ve been waking up with discomfort in the neck or just don’t seem to be sleeping all that well, maybe it’s time for a pillow change. Check out our tips on how to choose the best pillow for you.
Most people have a favorite sleeping position, and you probably do too. However, it’s essential to use a pillow that supports your position otherwise you risk developing pain in the neck. Any existing pain will also be exacerbated. Back-sleepers should ideally use a pillow that’s flatter to prevent the head from bending to the chin. Meanwhile, side-sleepers should use a higher pillow to fill out the gap between the shoulder and head. Stomach-sleepers, on the other hand, need a pillow that falls in the middle to keep their necks from angling too much.
Pillows are stuffed with different types of filling like down, foam, polyester, and cotton. While it’s a personal choice, you should consider a filling that doesn’t flatten easily and retains springiness. You don’t want to have to constantly fluff it! It shouldn’t retain too much heat either otherwise, it can make sleeping uncomfortable. A good filling choice is down alternative that adapts to your sleeping position and prevents clumping.
Like mattresses, pillows can become home to dust, dirt, and germs. They can trigger allergies and make sleep time of woe. Fortunately, there are pillows that use hypoallergenic material to eliminates this possibility. Even if you don’t have allergies, you should still opt for a hypoallergenic pillow to be on the safe side.
Standard pillows typically measure 20 x 26 inches and are suitable for most people. But, if you prefer the luxury of a larger space, you can size up to super standards, queens and even kings. They’re great for larger beds, but there’s no reason you can’t use them on smaller beds!
If possible, choose a pillow that maintains its original shape even after repeated use. Pillows that flatten easily won’t provide proper support and you’ll need to regularly fluff them. You’ll be compelled to replace them frequently too.
You want a pillow that doesn’t require a high level of maintenance because, really, who has the time? Not all pillows can be washed which makes cleaning them difficult and even impossible in some cases. You should go for one that can be washed without ruining the integrity of the filling and the fabric.
An important point but one that not many may consider is to choose a pillow based on the firmness of your mattress. If your mattress is firm, your pillow should be soft so that it adapts to your body’s weight better. If your mattress is soft, your pillow should be firm so that your head doesn’t sink in too much and push your spine out of alignment. Just be careful with very soft mattresses. Although they may feel comfortable at first, they easily get your spine out of its natural alignment. If your mattress has medium firmness, which is the majority of us, use a pillow that is easily conformable to your sleep position.

The Nuvanna pillow is one that meets all the requirements a pillow should have. Designed by mattress scientist, Alvaro Vaselli, it features 100 percent down alternative that’s made up of nearly a billion ultra-conformable fibers. These respond to different sleeping positions without flattening so that you receive the best comfort and support. The fibers are encased in a special hypoallergenic cover that enables airflow so that you sleep cool. The highly-conformable nature of the Nuvanna pillow allows it to adapt to different levels of pressure so you can use it with any mattress – whether soft, firm or medium-firm. It’s washable too; just place it into the washer, and it’s good to go!
Pillows are often overlooked in favor of bedding and mattresses, but they’re no less important. They have the ability to make or break your sleep and can spell doom or be a blessing for your neck. Invest in a pillow that both supports and provides comfort so that you can get the best sleep possible. Pair it with a mattress that does the same and good sleep will be yours each night!
