Mind Your Mattress! It Could Be An Allergy-Trigger

Sneezing, watery eyes, runny nose – they sound like common cold symptoms but they’re also symptoms of something else – allergies. On a more serious level, sufferers may wheeze and have difficulty breathing. Each year, over 50 million Americans experience an allergy. And, while there are different types such as food allergy, drug allergy, etc. it’s allergic rhinitis – also called hay fever – that’s the most common one an oftentimes overlooked environment for hay fever triggers is your bed. It can harbor allergens that can interfere with sleep and even your overall health. This is why it’s extremely important to choose your mattress carefully so that there are no disruptors. Consider this – in a survey of patients with allergic rhinitis, 68 percent of those with perennial allergy and 48 percent with seasonal allergy reported disrupted sleep.

What Causes Hay Fever?

Hay fever is caused by breathing in allergens that can cause a reaction such as sneezing. They can include pet dander, dust mites, pollen and spores from fungi. Not everyone is affected by them but those who are can have a hard time getting through the day. Imagine sneezing every few minutes, contending with itchy, watery eyes, fatigue, and a clogged nose – it’s not appealing! What makes hay fever worse is that the symptoms last for as long as you’re exposed to the allergens. So, if you continue sleeping on a mattress that’s packed with these allergens, you’ll be at the mercy of your symptoms. Further, if you suffer from a condition like asthma or sinus problems, you can expect hay fever symptoms to exacerbate.

Where Do These Allergens Thrive?

Dust mites and fungal spores are largely found indoors. They thrive in places that are damp such as in mattresses. When you breathe, the air you exhale creates a moist and warm environment that helps them grow. Oils from your body and dead skin are food for dust mites and considering you sleep for about 6-8 hours a night, that’s ample time for them to feast and your allergies to flare up! Sleeping through the night is difficult and even impossible as your symptoms will keep you awake.

Pet dander is shed by animals and if you’re allergic to it, you’ll need to rethink your decision to keep pets. Dust mites feed on it and if you sleep with your pets or they sleep in your bedroom, it’s a matter of time before you start seeing symptoms. If you can’t bear to be without them, it’s smart to move them out of your bedroom to another part of the house. You’ll get to sleep more peacefully. Pollen is mostly found outdoors so if you’re allergic to it, your symptoms will flare when you’re outside as the air disperses it. This doesn’t mean that you’ll be allergic to pollen from all plants, however; a test by an allergist can help you determine which you’re susceptible to.

How Can A Good Mattress Help?

You spend a good chunk out of 24 hours sleeping and you don’t want to be woken up by allergy attacks. A good mattress can thwart the entry of allergens as it utilizes fabrics that do. There’s a barrier to protect you and it prevents you from being up close and personal with dust mites, bacteria, etc. Aside from using a well-designed mattress, it’s important to keep upholstery and carpets vacuumed so there’s little chance of critters making their home. Bedding, upholstery, drapes, and carpets that are too old should be replaced.

We really like our new mattress! I use to wake up every day with my back aching. But not any more, Nuvanna has made a difference. I would highly recommend this mattress.

How Nuvanna Works

Nuvanna is a mattress that can reduce allergy triggers and help you sleep better. Designed by a material scientist with over 20 years of experience, it has all the characteristics a good mattress should have. It’s made of memory foam, which is known to be resistant to dust mites as the dense structure creates an unfavorable environment. The mattress is wrapped in botanically-derived TENCEL fabric that’s anti-bacterial and also dust mite-resistant.

Aside from creating an allergen-free surface to sleep on, Nuvanna features three unique layers that work to improve the quality of your sleep. The top layer is infused with cooling gel to regulate your body temperature and prevent you from overheating at night. The cooling gel also makes it more difficult for allergens to grow as they favor warm spaces. The middle layer prevents motion from being transferred across the bed so that you and your bed partner can sleep peacefully. The bottom layer supports all parts of the body, including the spine, to keep you from sinking in and developing back pain.

It’s not always possible to avoid allergens but that doesn’t mean your mattress has to be the culprit too. Good sleep should be a priority and one way to ensure it is to use a mattress that doesn’t allow allergens to make their home. A clean living space, replacing bedding and furnishings when you need to, and keeping humidity at optimum levels are some of the other ways to manage hay fever and sleep better.
