While several things can contribute to loneliness, such as ending a relationship or living alone for the first time, there’s another that’s been linked to it: sleeplessness.

The Link Between Loneliness And Lack Of Sleep

According to research by the University of Chicago, loneliness and sleeplessness could be intertwined. Loneliness has also repeatedly been linked to high blood pressure. Experts believe that this relationship arises because lonely people see the world as threatening, and this mindset reduces emotional support and positive feedback. In time, this can lead to sleep disruptions and high blood pressure. What’s more, it can also weaken the immune system and leave them prone to disease. On the other hand, poor sleep can adversely affect your psychological state. If you suffer from mental health problems and don’t sleep well, you could find symptoms worsening, including loneliness.

In the study by the University of Chicago, 89 subjects were tested. It was found that despite lonely and non-lonely individuals spending the same time in bed, lonely individuals slept for an average of 5.8 hours while non-lonely participants slept for 6.4 hours. Lonely subjects had more restless sleep, as well. Those who felt lonely were found to have elevated blood pressure in response to an increase in the resistance to blood flow in the body. The non-lonely subjects also had higher blood pressure, but it was caused by more blood being pumped through their bodies due to their feeling challenged by stressors.

The new findings are important because there are more people living alone now than ever. Of course, being alone is not the only cause of loneliness. There are others, too, such as not having close friends and a feeling of not belonging.

Dealing With Loneliness

Despite being quite pervasive, loneliness hasn’t been classified as a mental health condition but rather a symptom of one. However, it should be treated with the same care due to its ability to impact physical and mental health. If you frequently suffer from loneliness, you should try to find the cause and the best way to address it. Here are a few things that can help.

Try Something New

Loneliness can feel worse when you have time on your hands but little to do. Instead of letting it weigh you down, why not try a new hobby? It could be learning a musical instrument, painting, pottery, dancing, or reading. Something that you can engage in and even immerse yourself in. Gradually, you can find groups that are interested in the same hobby as you and even attend a program.

Adopt A Pet

Pets make wonderful companions, and they don’t ask for a lot! They’re great to have, especially if you live alone. They give you an opportunity to go outside, take a walk, and just connect with the world. However, you should carefully decide what type of pet to get. Ask yourself how much time you can dedicate to its care, the cost of raising it, how long it’s likely to live, and the habitat it needs to thrive. Once you’ve answered these questions, you’ll have a good idea of which pet is right for you and vice versa.

Keep In Touch

It may seem a little awkward in the beginning if you haven’t been keeping in touch with people, you know, but try to make the first move. Call your parents or speak to a friend you feel close to. Even if you can’t meet in person often, a phone call or a video chat can make a big difference. It keeps you from feeling isolated and gives you a sense of belonging, which is important to combat loneliness.
